Global HEED microcredit initiative service trip opportunities
Global H.E.E.D. (Health, Education, and Economic Development) is now accepting applications for the summer 2009 service trip to Calhuitz, Guatemala and summer 2009 service trips to Nepal. These trips are open to anyone 18 years and older. There are no foreign language requirements. The details of the trips are as follows.
Guatemala
- 2 week trip to Calhuitz, Guatemala
- The trip is from Friday, August 7 to Friday, August 21, 2009
- Volunteers will help build the first section of the health care clinic, conduct a community assessment and implement the micro-credit initiative
- Click here to apply online. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2009. The trip is limited to 20 volunteers. Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis (first come, first serve). A non-refundable deposit of $600 is due 2 weeks following acceptance in order to secure your spot on the trip.
- Trip cost: TBD. The trip cost covers hotels, housing, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), in-country transportation and logistical fees.
Nepal
- 3 week, 6 week, or 9 week trips to rural communities in Nepal
- Design and construct a case study for the area, which will inform Global HEED on area needs and potential projects to be implemented in future trips
- Construct a project proposal (with healthcare focus) within the 3-week timeframe which will contribute to welfare enhancement of the village residents
- Enjoy the exhilaration of exotic views and indigenous ethnic foods and cultural shows

The deadline to apply is May 1, 2009 for June 9th departure (June 30th return); May 15th, 2009 for June 30th departure (July 21st return); May 30th for June 21st departure (August 11th return). Each trip is limited to 12 volunteers. Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis (first come, first serve).

Volunteers on all trips will have the following unique opportunities
- Work closely with villagers and local NGOs to make an impact in in poverty-stricken communities
- Learn principles of community building, social change, servant-leadership
- Investigate issues pertaining to the economy, health and education in developing nations
- Particpate in ALL meetings between Global HEED executive board members and on-site partners
- Develop and conduct assessments and that will directly benefit the community
- Implement proposals to promote the quality of life for people living in remote, impoverished and under-served communities.
- Stand out when applying for jobs, scholarships, awards, medical school, public health school, law school, business school, and other graduate schools.
- Receive priority for Global HEED executive board and other leadership positions.

We encourage volunteers to contact their schools, study abroad offices and departments to earn academic credit and/or apply for scholarships and grants in addition to asking close friends and family to pledge support for this worthy cause.

About Global H.E.E.D.
Global Health, Education, and Economic Development (H.E.E.D.), Inc. is a registered non-profit organization that engages undergraduate and graduate students from universities around the nation to work with local organizations and communities in developing nations to address issues related to health, education and economic development. Global HEED serves to work with a local non-profit organization in Guatemala to build a health clinic and a school, implement a micro-credit initiative, create educational materials related to health, start a free-trade initiative that will allow the women in the community to sell some of the hand-made products in the US, donate computers and school supplies to the newly built school, etc. The organization was started by college students at Emory University in Atlanta, GA and Harvard University in Cambridge, MA after visiting a community in the remote mountains of Calhuitz, Guatemala.
Fundraising
Global HEED must raise at least $100,000 in order to build a basic health care clinic, a school, and implement the micro-credit initiative.
