got ideas? Bears Breaking Boundaries 2009 $80,000 contest

Big Ideas @ Berkeley and the ASUC (student government) are launching their 4th annual campus-wide contest for soliciting the best interdisciplinary student ideas. Bears Breaking Boundaries is a series of "idea competitions" that will encourage student teams to propose the next generation of research, education, and service activities on the UC Berkeley campus.

"BEARS BREAKING BOUNDARIES 2009" is awarding $80,000 in prize money in the following topics:

• Curricular Innovation
• Improving Student Life
• IT for Society
• Neglected Diseases
• Science, Engineering and Technology Policy
• Synthetic Biology

Submissions are due in late March. Please check the rules and guidelines for the specific contests that you're interested in for more details. Interdisciplinary teams are highly encouraged.

In addition to receiving seed funding for your projects, students will also be able to post their projects on the Big Ideas @ Berkeley
marketplace.

Goals of Bears Breaking Boundaries:

• Provide concrete support (money, advice, other resources) for creative, high-quality student proposals.
• Encourage UC Berkeley students to set ambitious goals for their current and future endeavors.
• Increase the role that UC Berkeley students play in shaping the next generation of research, education, and service activities on the campus.
• Encourage the innovation and fresh thinking that often arises from multidisciplinary student teams.
